I don't know when the sperm quality of men around the world seems to have gone wrong, but a study of semen samples from the CITIC Xiangya Human Sperm Bank, the first human sperm bank in China, involving 30,636 donors, showed that the proportion of qualified donors dropped from 55.78% in 2001 to 17.80% in 2015.
At the same time, a foreign study from a research scholar at Israel's Hebrew University showed that the average sperm count of men worldwide declined by more than 60% in just 45 years from 1973-2018.
Facing declining sperm quality, if you were, would you choose to donate sperm?
I. Sperm donor shares his experience: Do it yourself, and be well fed
Xiaofo is a sperm donor volunteer in Guangzhou. After hearing the news that the quality of sperm donation is not good, he suddenly wondered how his sperm quality is, and went to donate with an experiential mindset. The following is his own account:
01. The subsidy is second to none, the focus is that you can get a free medical checkup
The place where the sperm bank is located looks very cold. Upon arriving at the section, a doctor received me and told me about the detailed sperm donation process. There is also a flow chart on the wall of the reception room, detailing the allowance for sperm donation. Regardless of whether the sperm is qualified or not, there will be a subsidy of 50-200 RMB for each screening and formal sperm donation stage. After the final review after six months, when the sperm is accepted, the subsidy will range from 2,500 to 5,000 yuan.
What I found more attractive than the subsidy was the possibility of free medical checkups. Before the sperm donation, I was given five tubes of blood, which the doctor said screened for hepatitis B and C as well as HIV testing. After the test results came back, the staff gave me a small plastic canister jar and two wet wipes, and the next step was to go to the sperm collection room and fix it myself.
The sperm collection room had a TV showing a "mini-movie" and a poster on the wall, in addition to a bed, a sink, a trash can, and a bottle of hand sanitizer. I was given a $50 allowance after the sperm retrieval, and the whole process was very easy.
02. The second time I came prepared and even brought my own video footage
10 days later, the hospital called to tell me that I had become a qualified sperm donor and was ready to donate, and that I should pay attention to strict abstinence for 3-5 days before sperm donation. The second time I went to the hospital, I was very familiar with the process and even prepared my own material, which was quickly resolved after entering the sperm donor room. After the sperm donation was completed, I also got my allowance without any problems.
Two, sperm donation also has a threshold, need to meet these prerequisites
In line with the principle of eugenics, many families when using sperm from human sperm banks, there will be a bias towards the height, education, appearance, etc. of sperm donor volunteers, so sperm banks around the world have requirements to limit the conditions of sperm donors, sperm donation is not something you can donate if you want to.
According to the relevant national regulations, the specific requirements for sperm donor volunteers are: age 20 to 40 years old, net height >170cm, body mass index <30, good features, no disabilities/other physical defects, no significant hair loss, good lifestyle habits, no infectious disease/genetic history/sexually transmitted disease history, myopia <600 degrees, no color blindness color weakness/hypertension / heart disease, good living habits, etc. In addition, the requirements for sperm donor volunteers can vary from place to place.
For qualified sperm donors, the specific sperm donation process is divided into three steps:
III. You may also want to know this about sperm donation
Sperm donated by volunteers is mainly provided to human sperm banks for two main purposes: first, to reproductive medicine centers for artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization; second, for medical research. In addition, you may also want to know the following about sperm donation.
Zhang Xinzong, director of the Guangdong Human Sperm Bank, said that China has very strict control over the number of offspring a sperm donor can have, and one donor can get up to five women pregnant. In the United States, it is possible to get 25 women pregnant, and the common standard in other countries in Europe and the United States is 10 women.
As the saying goes, one drop of semen is ten drops of blood, and many men worry that sperm donation will affect their health? Dr. Li Tao of the Human Sperm Bank of Fudan University said that a normal sexually mature male will ejaculate 2-6ml of semen one to three times a week, which is very normal and will not affect his health.
Dr. Tang Lixin, director of the Guangdong Human Sperm Bank, pointed out that there is a limit to sperm donation, and once the donor quantity reaches 15ml, he cannot continue to donate sperm, so it is not feasible to make a fortune from sperm donation.
Yenshin: Does sperm quality get better or worse when men abstain from sex for a long time?
Many couples preparing for pregnancy have heard the saying that men who abstain from sex for a month will have more sperm in their semen, and the higher the quality of sperm, the more likely a woman will conceive. The more the man abstains from sex, the better the sperm quality will be.
After the male sperm is produced in the testicles, it enters the epididymis and is not discharged for a long period of time, allowing it to be continuously damaged by oxygen free radicals and phagocytes in the semen, allowing the sperm to age, lose vitality and die.
As the number of ejaculations changes, a dynamic balance is created between aging and mature sperm in the epididymis, maintaining a reserve of sperm in the epididymis. If you don't have sex for a long time, it will increase the number of senescent sperm within the sperm reserve, and instead, the sperm count will decline.
So how long do men abstain from sex for better sperm quality? Before we answer that question, let's look at the results of a study that speaks to the data.
A researcher collected 8686 semen samples and divided them into 4 groups according to the duration of abstinence: group A (<2 days), group B (3-5 days), group C (6-7 days), and group D (>7 days), and examined the semen volume, sperm concentration, sperm count, and total number of forward-moving sperm in the 4 groups. Finally, it was found that sperm viability was highest in group C (6-7 days) among the 4 groups, and sperm quality decreased significantly as the abstinence time became longer.
The results of this experiment are consistent with the WHO Laboratory Manual for the Examination and Processing of Human Semen, 6th edition, which requires men to abstain from semen testing for 2-7 days.
When all is said and done, you should know the answer.
